(1) The top half of the upper saw of a double circular mill shall be covered by a strong and rigid hood guard.
(2) The top of the saw of a single circular mill shall be covered by a strong and easily adjustable guard with a flange on either side of the saw. The guard shall extend from the top of the riving knife to a point as low as practicable at the cutting edge of the saw.
(3) Behind and in direct line with the saw of a single circular mill and behind and in direct line with the lower saw of a double circular mill there shall be a riving knife which shall not be less than 125 mm wide at the level of the log deck, shall have a smooth surface, shall be strong, rigid and easily adjustable and shall conform to the following conditions—
  • (a)the edge of the knife nearer the single or lower saw shall form an arc of a circle having a radius not exceeding the radius of the largest single or lower saw used;
  • (b)the knife shall be maintained as close as practicable to the single or lower saw, having regard to the nature of the work being done at the time and at the level of the log deck the distance between the front edge of the knife and teeth of the saw shall not exceed 50 mm;
  • (c)for a single or lower saw of a diameter of less than 600 mm the knife shall extend upwards from the level of the log deck to within 25 mm of the top of that saw, and for a single or lower saw of a diameter of 600 mm or over shall extend upwards from the level of the log deck to a height of not less than three-quarters of the height of the saw blade above the log deck.
(4) The lower half of the saw on single circular mills and the bottom half of the lower saw of double circular mills shall be protected by 2 plates of metal or other suitable material one on each side of the saw; such plates shall extend from the axis of the saw outwards to a distance of not less than 150 mm beyond the teeth of the saw.
(5) Double circular mills shall be provided with screens of wire mesh or other suitable devices, so placed as to protect the sawyer from flying particles.
