[CS 13,875] Special consideration for pregant women or mothers in prison with their child2

2.1 Consideration must be given to the best interests of a child with regard to the placement of a child with the mother in prison.
2.2 A child may live with the mother in prison until the age of 6 years.
2.3 If after assessment it is deemed inappropriate for a child to reside with the mother, steps must be taken to either place the child with relatives or appropriate alternatives via the relevant Government agency.
2.4 Proper measures must be taken to ensure the health and welfare of a prisoner during pregnancy and after childbirth. This includes—
  • (a)a balanced diet;
  • (b)medical assistance;
  • (c)the opportunity to give birth in hospital;
  • (d)appropriate clothing for the baby.
2.5 Children residing in prison are to be provided with—
  • (a)medical care;
  • (b)suitable clothing;
  • (c)a balanced diet;
  • (d)opportunities for physical and educational development.
